Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar had some harsh words for the Pakistan team after they lost to India by 124 runs in their first Champions Trophy match in Birmingham on Sunday.

While speaking to a news channel in Pakistan, Akhtar said the team should learn from their mistakes.

Pakistan’s fielding was so poor, we dropped lollipop catches! It goes to show the Pakistan team’s calibre and standard.

A batsman is expected to have a strike rate of 100, but the Pakistan batsmen seem to be batting in a different era, he said.

Cricket is not a game of dot balls. It is normal for batsmen to score at a strike rate of 100 in this day and age. Scoring 300 runs in 50 overs, is usual. I don’t know which style have our batsmen developed and I don’t know from whom have they learnt to play cricket.

The ‘Rawalpindi Express’ also questioned the players who have been selected for the Champions Trophy. Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal should have been part of Pakistan’s squad, Akhtar said.

The selection of the team also wasn’t right. The pitches in West Indies didn’t suit Kamran Akmal, but in England, he could have been a handy opener as the ball comes onto the bat on the pitches there. Umar Akmal would have come out to bat after 25 overs, how fit does he need to be?

Akmal was dropped from the Champions Trophy squad because he failed a fitness test.
