Rahul Gandhi, Arun Jaitley Spar on Vijay Mallya’s ‘Escape’

Rahul Gandhi and Arun Jaitley faced off against each other on the issue of liquor baron Vijay Mallya escaping India.

A combative Rahul Gandhi asked the government how it allowed liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who owes over Rs 9,000 crore to banks, to leave the country. He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley have failed to answer this very question in their speeches.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley hit back by saying that banks should have acted earlier to stop Vijay Mallya from going abroad.

Jaitley further added, “There is a legal process to stop somebody (from going abroad). Either your passport is impounded or there is an order of a court. Otherwise, nobody can stop you.”

“Banks went to court seeking an order. In this anticipation, he (Mallya) left earlier,” said Jaitley.
