Mubeen Rajhu, a steel worker from Lahore, shot his sister Talseem Raza in the head for marrying a Christian man. He justified his act as ‘honour killing’ – and said it was done to protect the respect of the family.

Neighbours, colleagues and friends of the accused said he did the right thing as “it is a sin to marry outside the religion”. A Muslim cleric said, “A woman should be beaten with 100 sticks and this is prescribed in the Sharia laws in the Quran.”

Activists strongly condemned the act. “There is no honour in killing. This is premeditated murder and should be treated as such,” they said.
