CLAIM

A viral video is being circulated on social media with the claim that several Kashmiris took to streets ‘yesterday,’ 7 August, in Kashmir to protest against the government of India.

This comes a few days after the Modi-led government effectively revoked Article 370 on 5 August thereby ridding Jammu and Kashmir of its special status. Further, the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been bifurcated into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir division and Ladakh.

In the video, several women can be heard raising ‘azaadi’ slogans. The claim along with the video reads: ‘Hundreds of thousands Kashmiris took street yesterday in Indian occupied Kashmir to liberate their land from India... One of Kashmiris requested to spread this video all over the world as Indian media did not cover such a huge rally. So, please share as much as possible.

Several social media users shared the video on Facebook and Twitter with the same claim.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim with which the video is being shared is false. While it’s true that the video is from Jammu and Kashmir, it’s not a recent video. It dates back to December 2018.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

On looking at the video carefully, we found a hoarding that read ‘Baramulla Central Co-operative Bank Ltd.’ and name of the branch as ‘Hajin.’ Hence, we could ascertain that video is from Jammu and Kashmir.

To find the origin of the video, we searched on YouTube using keywords ‘women kashmir azaadi,’ and found a video uploaded in December 2018, titled as ‘Women of Kashmir Chanting Azadi slogans | Kashmir want freedom.’

While we have established that the video is old and unrelated to the current Jammu and Kashmir crisis, we are yet to verify the reason that led to this march.

(This copy will be updated as and when we get information from the Valley about the context of the December 2018 rally.)
