On being paid Rs 1.5 per kilogram for onions two farmers from Satana taluka, Maharashtra’s Nashik, dumped 30 quintals of onion in a sign of vehement protest.
Ravindra Birari of Kandane village and Prashant Mahajan of Dhandari village were frustrated with the low price the government body Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) offered to pay for their produce. The farmers told the Times of India that the production cost they had to incur was Rs 9 per kilogram hence the amount they were getting was not only not making up their costs but also affecting their financial stability.
Farmers from across India have been protesting against the low price paid for their produce and demanding loan waivers. They claim that the government hasn’t been doing anything to help the ongoing agrarian crisis.
