A snow storm hit southern US states on Sunday, 9 December, closing several schools and cancelling hundreds of flights across North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan and Missouri.

Governors and local officials declared emergencies ahead of the storm crossing several Southern states, which hit portions of North Carolina and Virginia particularly hard, reported Associated Press.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled due to the snow-storm in the Midwest. Flight cancellations and delays continued on Monday, 10 December, at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, the sixth busiest airport in the country. The airport had nearly 400 cancellations, about one-fourth of its scheduled flights.

More than 244,000 power outages were reported across the region, with North Carolina bearing the brunt of it, according to poweroutage.us. South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee also had outages reported on Monday.

“North Carolina is in the cold icy grip of a mammoth winter storm. Enjoy the beauty but respect the danger. Snow and ice outside your window can make the scene look like a holiday card but don’t be fooled. This storm is treacherous especially if you try to drive in it.”
Roy Cooper, North Carolina Governor
