Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday, 23 October, fired a fresh salvo at Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter’s home turf in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. In a politically-charged speech, Gandhi slammed the incumbent government in the state.

Here are the five key takeaways from Rahul Gandhi’s speech from the ‘Navsarjan Janadesh Mahasammelan’.

‘GST is Gabbar Singh Tax’

Rahul Gandhi dubbed the Goods and Services Tax as 'Gabbar Singh Tax', naming it after Bollywood's iconic villain. He said that the GST was conceived by the Congress party, but it has been distorted by the BJP government at the Centre.

Their (Centre’s) GST is not GST. GST means Gabbar Singh Tax. This is causing a loss to the country. Small shopkeepers are finished. Lakhs of youths have gone unemployed. But they are still not ready to listen.

He further added that GST, in its current form, is causing massive loss to the country and hence has to be simplified and modified.

‘PM Modi Banned Notes Because He Didn’t Like Them’

Gandhi also mocked PM Modi over demonetisation announced by him on 8 November 2016.

On 8 November, Modiji said I don’t like these Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes, so from midnight, I’m going to scrap it... He hit the axe. For the first 2-3 days, even he could not understand what had happened.

‘The Voice of Gujarat Can’t Be Bought’

Rahul Gandhi attacked PM Modi and the BJP while latching on to the bribery allegations made by Narendra Patel, an activist of the Hardik Patel-led Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS).

This voice of Gujarat cannot be silenced or suppressed. You can offer any thing, (Rs) one crore, (Rs) 10 crore, (Rs) 50 crore, (Rs) 1,000 crore, the entire budget of India, the entire money in the world, (but) this Gujarati voice cannot be purchased.

Narendra Patel, within hours of joining the BJP, had alleged at a press conference on 22 October that he was offered Rs 1 crore by the BJP and was given a token amount of Rs 10 lakh.

‘Why is PM Modi Silent on Jay Shah?’

The Congress Vice President also targeted the prime minister on the issue of alleged business deals of Amit Shah’s son Jay.

Modiji, ‘Make in India’ has failed. Only one company has benefited from the programme. The company was worth of Rs 50,000 and did not make any progress till 2014. But after 2014, it grew to Rs 80 crore.

Taking a dig at PM Modi’s slogan of ‘Na khaunga, na khane dunga’, Gandhi urged him to speak at least one sentence on the allegations on Jay Shah.

‘BJP Govt Works Only For 4-5 Industrialists’

Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP government works only for the development of 4-5 rich and powerful industrialists, but doesn’t pay heed to the needs of the others. He demanded that the government waiver the farm loans.

Last year, government of India waived off Rs 1.30 lakh crore loans of the richest industrialists in the country. Vijay Mallya took a loan of Rs 9,000 crore. The government is still negotiating with him. But when a farmer in Gujarat appeals for a loan waiver, you say that you won’t do it.
