Among the saint community of India, Morari Bapu holds a special place. He is well known to answer the spiritual questions of his devotees through his religious insights. But when one of his devotee, whose mother was a sex worker, asked Morari Bapu that why was he born in a brothel, that made the saint a little uncomfortable.

It was then that Morari Bapu decided to hold a religious event called ‘Manas Ganika’ specially for the sex workers.

What is ‘Manas Ganika’?

Ayodhya is usually associated with the political storm in connection with the Ram temple and Babri demolition issue. But this time, it has made headlines for an event in which sex workers are being told story of Lord Rama.

Manas Ganika’ is an event where sex workers are told stories about the life of Lord Rama. The event has been organised on the banks of river Saryu and sex workers from all the countries attended the event. This is the first such religious initiative for the sex workers.

However, the initiative has left the saints of Ayodhya divided. While some of them support it, others have opposed this initiative.

Morari Bapu personally visited the sex workers in Kamathipura area of Mumbai to invite them for the event.

“This was an ‘untouchable’ issue for us. We never thought about it. They (sex workers) were seen in the wrong light .Before this too, (Morari) Bapu dared to work for the transgender community. These sex workers never would have thought that a saint of this stature will organise a religious event and invite them on such a large scale. From what I saw, I could see how eagerly they listened to the story and they have learnt from it and because of the influence that Bapu wields, the perception of society towards sex workers will definitely change.”

Sex Workers Are Happy To Be Respected

In a society that looks down upon a sex worker, when they are treated with so much respect, it’s like a dream come true for them. The sex workers were not only invited, but seated right next to the stage for the event. Some of them feel that Bapu has treated them like his own daughter.

“He has treated us like his own daughter. We are happy that we were given such respect. We are being cared for like we are his kids. He respected us but what have other people done? This is the difference in mentality.”
