1. Rafale Deal: AG Argues Govt Docs ‘Stolen’, SC Adjourns Hearing

The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 6 March, adjourned hearing the petitions seeking a review of its judgment on the government’s purchase of 36 Rafale jets from Dassault Aviation to 14 March.

During the proceedings on Wednesday, Attorney General (AG) KK Venugopal had told the court that the documents published by The Hindu on the Rafale deal were not supposed to be brought in public domain and that they were ‘stolen’ from the Defence Ministry.

2. Day After Outrage, Pak Confiscates Seminaries, Assets of JuD & FIF

A day after there was outrage over Hafiz Saeed’s Jamaat-ud-Dawa and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation being put on the ‘watch list’ of the National Counter Terrorism Authority, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry on Tuesday, 5 March, put the two groups under the list of proscribed organisations.

Meanwhile, a statement by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that the country’s high commissioner to India will return to New Delhi more than two weeks after he was recalled for consultations by Islamabad.

Moreover, Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar’s brother Mufti Abdul Rauf was among the 44 members of banned outfits who were detained in Pakistan on the same day.

4. SC Reserves Order to Refer Ayodhya Case to Mediator

The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 6 March, reserved its order on whether to refer Ayodhya land dispute case to court-appointed mediator.

While the Muslim groups were open to mediation, the Hindu groups opposed it.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi has asked all parties to submit to the court the names of possible mediators, as the judges intend to announce their decision shortly.

5. LS Polls, Citizen Data Among Top Priorities: Parl Committee on IT

After a meeting with Facebook's Global Policy Vice President Joel Kaplan, the parliamentary committee on information technology has told officials from Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, national security and protecting citizens’ data are the panel's top priorities, news agency ANI reported on Wednesday, 6 March.

After meeting Kaplan on Friday, panel chief Anurag Thakur said that the social media giant has accepted there is a need for corrective measures and that it is ready to implement them. He said that the company will be in touch with the Election Commission to work on information provided by the concerned ministries.

6. Unemployment Rate in India Highest at 7.2% Since Sept 2016: Report

The unemployment rate in India was at 7.2 percent in February 2019, the highest since September 2016, according to data compiled by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) that was released on Tuesday, 5 March, Reuters reported. The rate was at 5.9 percent in February 2018.

The survey is based on tens of thousands of households across India.

Mahesh Vyas, head of the think tank, told Reuters that unemployment rate has risen despite a fall in the number of job seekers. He also said that the number of employed persons in India was estimated at 400 million in February compared with 406 million last year.
