1. SC Upholds Death Penalty For Nirbhaya Case Convicts, Rejects Pleas

The Supreme Court on Monday, 9 July upheld the death sentence awarded to the convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. Three of the four adult convicts had filed review petitions seeking reduction of the death sentence to life imprisonment.

A three-judge bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and R Bhanumathi, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, pronounced the verdict. AP Singh, counsel for the convicts, said that the verdict was given due to political, public and media pressure.

“Justice should be served to everyone. Injustice has been done to the children (convicts). This decision has come due to political, public and media pressure,” he said.

2. Heavy Rains to Continue in Mumbai

Mumbaikars witnessed a rainy start to the week on Monday, 9 July, the third consecutive day of heavy showers. The IMD has predicted heavy showers will continue till Wednesday, 11 July. All schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region remained shut on 9 July.

According to official updates, Western and Central Railway trains are running with a delay of 15-20 minutes. Visuals from across the city show extreme water-logging on roads and rail tracks with the rain showing no signs of abiding.

3. NCLT Rules in Favour of Tata Sons, Says Mistry Went Against Board

The two-year long legal feud between Tata Sons Ltd and its erstwhile chairman Cyrus Mistry came to an end on Monday, 9 July, with the Mumbai bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) ruling in favor of Tata Sons.

The NCLT found no merit in Mistry’s arguments that Ratan Tata and NA Soonawala were interfering in the governance of Tata Sons, according to the verdict.

The bench, headed by Justices BSV Prakash Kumar and V Nallasenapathy, dismissed Mistry’s plea regarding corporate mismanagement and his ouster, after hearing both the parties for nearly four months between October and February.

4. Lamps to Signal Trains Even Today in PM’s Constituency Varanasi

Most of the railway stations across the country operate on the RRI (Route Relay Interlocking) system. The interlocking system handles a large number of trains and their movements. But in Varanasi, PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency, the Manduadih railway station is still running on the 'Standard One’ operating system that dates back to British India.
