Months of political drama in Karnataka came to an end with JD(S)'s HD Kumaraswamy taking oath as the chief minister. The Congress got the lion’s share in the state, with G Parameswara being appointed the Deputy CM and KR Ramesh being appointed as as the Speaker of theAassembly.

The Opposition parties, in what is being seen as a 'show of strength' were in full attendance – from Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav to NCP President Sharad Pawar and CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury.

2. Sterlite Row: Death Toll Rises to 12, Protesters Set Bus on Fire

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday, 23 May, stayed the construction of a new copper smelter, a day after the months-long protest demanding the closure of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu took a violent turn, with the death of at least 12 protestors in police firing.

Meanwhile, hundreds of police officials, dressed in full riot gear, were stationed outside the hospital where the post-mortem of those who were killed yesterday was being conducted. A bus was set ablaze by a group of protesters outside the hospital in Tuticorin.

Retired Judge Aruna Jagadeesan will lead the inquiry committee set up by the Tamil Nadu government to probe the law and order situation and circumstances under which 12 people died in a police firing.
