1. Majerhat Flyover Collapses in Kolkata
Several people are feared dead after a portion of the arterial Majerhat flyover in South Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday, 4 September. “Our team is focused on relief and rescue work,” said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee soon after the tragedy struck the state capital.
2. Lois Sofia Gets Bail After ‘Anti-BJP’ Sloganeering Before TN BJP Chief
A 28-year-old student, Lois Sofia, was arrested on Monday, 3 September, for shouting "fascist BJP government down down" on-board a flight in the presence of Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan.
Although the research scholar from Canada has been granted unconditional bail, the arrest had led to intense outrage against the police and the AIADMK government. Reacting to the arrest, DMK chief M K Stalin accused the Tamil Nadu government of stifling the right to free speech.
3. Fuel Prices on the Rise in Delhi for 10th Consecutive Day
Prices of petrol and diesel, already at unprecedented levels in the country, rose for the tenth consecutive day on Tuesday, 4 September, even as analysts said the dual impact of rising oil prices and the depreciating rupee increases regulatory risks for state-run oil and gas firms.
In the national capital, petrol prices rose by 16 paise to Rs 79.31 per litre, while diesel rates saw a jump by 19 paise to Rs 79.34 per litre.
4. Patidar Leader Hardik Patel Weak But Refuses to End Fast
Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Deve Gowda, in a heartfelt letter, pleaded with Patidar reservation leader Hardik Patel to call off his fast unto death, stating that the youth leader’s services “are needed in this country to fight further for good causes”.
Deve Gowda also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging his intervention in Hardik Patel’s fast before the youth leader’s death.
Hardik Patel began an indefinite fast at his home in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on 25 August, stating that he wouldn’t eat till his demand for reservation for members of the Patel community in public employment and educational institutions was met.
