2. UP Cop Killed in Ghazipur Mob Violence, 27 People Arrested

At least 27 people have been arrested in connection with the killing of a police official in UP’s Ghazipur on Saturday. Police head constable Suresh Vats was killed in Ghazipur on Saturday, 29 December, when protesters hurled stones at vehicles returning from the venue of a meeting addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This is the second incident in a month in UP where a police man was killed in mob violence. Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh was shot dead by a mob in Bulandhshar on 3 December after violence broke out over allegations of cow slaughter.Weeks later, police have released the four Muslim men they had initially arrested for alleged cow slaughter . The police, however, arrested three others who were not named in the original FIR. B. 1984 Riots: Sajjan Kumar Surrenders, To Be Lodged in Mandoli Jail

Former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and two other convicts in the 1984 Riots case surrendered before a Delhi Court to serve their respective jail terms. Kumar was sentenced to life for the "remainder of his natural life" by the Delhi High Court on 17 December. The high court had on 21 December rejected Kumar’s plea seeking extension till 31 January 2019 to surrender.

C. Triple Talaq Bill Hits Roadblock, Rajya Sabha Adjourned Till Wednesday

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 January after the Opposition unanimously demanded that the contentious Triple Talaq Bill be referred to a select committee. The bill was passed in Lok Sabha last week.
