Indian players dominated the bidding wars as KL Rahul and Manish Pandey laughed their way to the bank with multi-million dollar deals, but England all-rounder Ben Stokes once again emerged the costliest buy in the IPL auctions.

The star of the day was without a doubt Ben Stokes, who was bought for Rs 12.5 crore by the returning IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals.

Indian Talent Over Foreign Fame

The franchises favoured the current India players over the foreign lot this time in the auction.

Stylish opener KL Rahul and middle-order batsman Manish Pandey bagged deals worth Rs 11 crore from Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. With their prices skyrocketing, the two players' original franchises RCB and KKR didn't use their Right To Match (RTM) cards.

Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan's stint at IPL 2017 was clearly not forgotten as after a bidding war between Kings XI, Rajasthan, Delhi and Bangalore that saw his price soar up to Rs 9 crore, his old team Sunrisers Hyderabad still used their Right To Match (RTM) card to buy him back for Rs 9 crore.

The Karnataka players had a field day at the auctions with Karun Nair also triggering a bidding war before Kings XI Punjab got him for Rs 5.60 crore.

Kedar Jadhav also fetched a healthy price of Rs 7.80 crore for his all-round qualities of batting, round-arm off-spin and back-up wicket-keeping. He was scalped by Chennai Super Kings.

Reputation Doesn’t Matter

Reputation counts for little, it was evident on Day 1 of the IPL auction which saw heavyweights such as Chris Gayle go unsold alongside England captain Joe Root, while Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh were bought only at their base price.

Gayle, who formed one of the most dangerous opening pairings in the IPL alongside Virat Kohli, found no takers at his base price of Rs 2 crore.

The West Indian could be brought back to the auction pool on Day 2 with other unsold players at the request of a franchise.

Another IPL regular who went unsold was Sri Lanka pacer and former spearhead of Mumbai Indians bowling attack, Lasith Malinga.

No Takers For Root and Amla

England captain Root went into his maiden IPL auction with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore but did not attract a bid. Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson and Ashes star Josh Hazlewood too were ignored by the teams. They both went into the auction with a Rs 2 crore base price.

South Africa batsman Hashim Amla was another big international name to go unsold. The other names to miss out on the opening day were India's Ishant Sharma, Parthiv Patel and Murali Vijay.

Indian veterans Yuvraj Singh, who fetched a record Rs 16 crore deal in the past, and Harbhajan Singh, did not generate a lot of interest from teams this time and went to KXIP and CSK respectively at their Rs 2 crore base price.
