Officials say one person is dead and three others have been hospitalised in a shooting in the entertainment district of downtown Austin on Sunday morning.

Austin Police Chief of Staff Brian Manley says police received reports of gunshots in the crowded entertainment area shortly after 2 am local time (0700 GMT).

Police arrived to find a chaotic scene and five people shot.

Manley says one woman has been pronounced dead at the scene, and three others, all female, have been taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge (UMCB) with gunshot wounds.

He said another victim declined to be transported to the hospital.

There were also reports of gunfire at a nearby location shortly after the initial incident, but Manley said the second shooting was unconnected to the first and resulted in no injuries.
