Four more chikungunya deaths were on Tuesday reported at a city hospital, taking to five the number of fatalities due to the vector-borne disease in Delhi where the number of cases have mounted to over 1,000 this season.

65-year-old Ramendra Pandey on Monday died of chikungunya at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, in what could be the first such death in the national capital.

The other two deaths also took place at the same hospital on Monday and both victims were aged above 60 as well.

The Delhi government on Tuesday blamed Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and BJP-controlled municipal bodies for the spread of chikungunya in the capital.

Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendar Jain accused the BJP-controlled civic bodies of not taking preventive steps to control the spread of the disease.

It is the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that has to take preventive steps like fogging and sanitation in the city to check the spread of dengue and chikungunya. The three civic bodies are not performing their duties properly to keep Delhi clean.

Jain added that the patient who died of chikungunya was from Uttar Pradesh.

“Lots of patients arrive in the national capital in critical condition. I am going back to Delhi today (Tuesday) to take stock of the situation,” he said.

The BJP on Tuesday targeted Delhi’s AAP government over the deaths due to dengue and chikungunya, and asked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to quit if he is unable to act.

Sir if you don’t have the capacity to buy a pen, as you are suggesting, why don’t you resign? If you say that you have no role as the Chief Minister of Delhi, how come the Chief Minister and other ministers’ offices spent Rs one crore on snacks and Rs 526 core on ads.
Sambit Patra, BJP Spokesperson

Kejriwal, who is in Bengaluru, said on Tuesday that he is left with no power even to “buy a pen” and that people should question the “Prime Minister and lieutenant Governor”.

Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit hit out at Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues for “touring other states while Delhi is reeling under chikungunya”.

As far as I know, all the ministers are out of Delhi. It is the responsibility of the government...More than negligence, it is a matter of playing with the lives of people.
Sheila Dikshit, Congress leader

Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken slammed Kejriwal and Jung for “passing the buck”.

State BJP chief Satish Upadhyay also denounced Kejriwal and his ministers for “remaining absent” from the city even as he directed the party-ruled MCDs to make best efforts to halt the spread of chikungunya and dengue.
