On 1 August, Kuldeep Moran, son of BJP leader Ratnaswer Moran, was abducted on by members of people who claimed to be part of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).
In a video message sent to Kuldeep’s uncle, BJP MLA Bolin Chetia, the UFLA ultras demanded Rs 1 crore ransom in return of his nephew’s life. The video footage of Kuldeep was sent to media after commander-in-chief Poresh Boruah’s permission.
However, on the morning of 24 August, Boruah said they had not demanded any money from Kuldeep’s family. Kuldeep was kidnapped for his work as an informer with the Indian Army and Assam police and other security forces, Boruah added. He further informed that the kidnapped boy is in ULFA custody and “in a good health”.
Although, on 23 August, Kuldeep’s father Ratnaswer said that ULFA publicity secretary Arunodoy told him over a telephone call that they wanted Rs 80 lakh for Kuldeep’s release.
In another video message released by the kidnappers, Kuldeep is seen surrounded by five armed insurgents whose faces were covered. He is seen pleading for his life and requesting the family and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to consider the seriousness of the matter.
