At Rio Olympics 2016, the women of India put patriarchy to shame. While Sakshi Malik ended the medal drought by becoming the first Indian to win a medal at 2016 Olympics, PV Sindhu made it one better by becoming first Indian shuttler to bag a silver at the Olympics.
The ‘produnova girl’ Dipa Karmakar also punched above her weight as she missed the podium by a whisker, finishing 4th in the Vaults event in her very first Olympic appearance.
World no. 1 tennis player, Sania Mirza also came very near bagging her first Olympic medal as she and Rohan Bopanna lost to American pair of Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram. The Mirza-Bopanna pair won the first set in the semis, before going down 2-1 after losing the second set and the tie breaker set.
Lalita Babar also created history as she became the first Indian woman to qualify for the finals of 3000m steeplechase in the Olympics. Babar finished 10th in the finals.
