In what comes as a big relief to drivers across the country, the Government of India is all set to work with a new system that would enable drivers to travel with a soft copy of their driving license.

The Transport and IT Ministry is all launched a new system called the ‘DigiLocker+’, which would enable drivers to do away with carrying smart cards or old licences and registration books.

How Would DigiLocker+ Work?

It is a smartphone app-based system that would store and display the user’s information in one place. The officials, from the other end, will also use the app-based setup to verify the documents against the national registry.

All you need is an Aadhar Card to open an account. You would also be required to link your cellphone number to the account. Easy, isn’t it?

Benefits to the Government

The new system will enable the government to maintain a centralised registry of vehicles, accessible from all parts of the country. The Digilocker+ will keep the driver’s information secure. The information could be accessed by the traffic police at all check-points.

A nationwide record of all automobiles will be beneficial for the government in the long run.

The traffic police will benefit immensely from this as it would be easier for them to issue challans and fines in case of breach of law by drivers.

Telangana and Delhi traffic police would definitely benefit the most as they are already in the process of issuing e-challans.

Reactions Awaited

While the new technology sounds perfect, the reactions of the police officials are awaited as the DigiLocker+ will significantly bring down prevalent corruption.

Most of the time, people violating the law get away with it by bribing police officials, but the new system leaves no scope for such practices.
