In the coming months, Uber drivers will reportedly start asking you for a 4-digit code, before you begin your ride with the cab aggregator. There have been multiple reports which claims that Uber has been testing this feature, and now Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, speaking to The Verge, confirmed the roll out of the option very soon.
This will more or less work similar to that of Ola cabs in India, which introduced this feature to make sure a driver doesn’t start the ride without on-boarding the passenger.
As per Khosrowshahi, Uber’s intention is similar, initially asking the rider to spell out the code, to the cab assigned to them. Having said that, he did highlight that Uber is working on ultrasonic technology which will enable this feature to work wirelessly in the coming months.
The code feature ensures that a driver doesn’t take undue advantage of starting a journey, something which did work in Ola’s favour in India.
It will be interesting to see if Uber brings the code feature to India in the coming months, which the company has been testing with some of its passengers over the past few weeks.
But that’s not the only change expected with Uber.
The mobile app is getting overhauled, wherein it will offer cab and the Eats service through one platform. This way, people won’t have to download two separate apps.
In the West, Uber is going the Google/Apple way, by offering transit information schedule through the main app. This way, Uber thinks it can compliment the existing public transportation system and its commuters.
Uber will be hoping with these tweaks and additions, as well as enhancing its safety measures, could help in changing its revenue fortunes, as it continues to bear heavy losses.
