Google is now optimising its Google Assistant to understand queries and commands made in Hindi. The feature makes its way to Android phones that are running version 5.0 Lollipop and above.
The integration of Hindi to the voice-assistant helps Google’s cause to make it accessible for consumers across the country, especially with Android taking a nosedive to entry-level devices with the recently launched Android version called Oreo Go.
The language support also comes in handy for people with JioPhone, which will soon get support of Google Assistant (GA).
So, how can you make the Google Assistant on your phone understand voice commands in Hindi? Well, here’s what you should do.
Hindi Support on Google Assistant:
- Go to Settings on your phone
- Select Language and Input
- Add English (India) as your default language for the phone
- Activate GA on the phone, dish out voice commands in Hindi
After setting up the default language on our phone, we tried out the new feature to see how GA has evolved to understand queries in Hindi.

While the commands in Hindi were accurately picked up by the voice assistant, the replies continue to show up in English, which could change in the coming weeks, as Google might be fine tuning the feature at its end to make it seamlessly work in Hindi (both ways).
Merely accepting voice commands in Hindi and not replying back in the same language won’t be helpful to everyone.
Voice is slowly gaining traction in the Indian market, and various analysts have pointed that out. It puts features like Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri and Jio Voice in the spotlight, and Google in many ways, wants to focus at places where voice search can be optimised. This move could also heighten the chances of Google launching its Google Home series in the country in the coming months.
