Tata Motors is planning to go on a electric vehicle launching spree in 2020, and in addition to Tigor sedan, the company will be launching four more models to bump its fleet of EV in the country.
According to the company’s chief, speaking to the shareholders at the AGM recently, Tata Motors will basically convert its existing fleet of cars into electric, something which they’ve already done with the Tigor, available to government entities for now.
So, customers in the country can look forward to EV version of the Nexon SUV, the upcoming Altroz hatchback will also be electrified and there will be another EV which is likely to be detailed later this year.
Tata will kickstart the EV spree with the Nexon SUV, launching around January 2019. Other than this, Tata Motors will also launch a new version of Tigor which will offer longer driving range on a single charge.
Without divulging more details on the electric power train likely to be fitted in these EVs, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Motors highlighted the need to set up charging station.
So, in addition to launching cars, the company will also focus on improving the infrastructure needed to increase demand for EVs.
For this, Tata Motors will most likely set up charging stations in over 25 cities to start of with, and expand to more regions in the foreseeable future.
In terms of pricing, the EV version of the Tigor costs Rs 9.9 lakh (ex-showroom) but with a lot of incentives on offer. Tata Motors is likely to put the Nexon EV and Altroz EV somewhere between the Rs 10 to 15 lakh price bracket, when it launches sometime next year.
EVs are going to become fairly prevalent in the news in the country next year, with the changing needs of the country’s government. Maruti Suzuki is also expected to join the EV space with the electric variant of the WagonR.
Hyundai’s taken the first-mover advantage by launching the Kona compact SUV, but this one costs Rs 25 lakh, which doesn’t make it affordable but for an EV it is definitely practical.
