The Indian automobile market is going electric as a plethora of two and four-wheeler makers are switching to building electric vehicles.

Royal Enfield is the latest to join this bandwagon as even it has said that it is planning to make electric vehicles. Company CEO Vinod Dasari confirmed the same in an interview with The Economic Times.

Speaking about the current slowdown in the automobile sector he said that worst is over and the company is expected to grow from here on.

Other two-wheeler makers like Revolt, Kymco and even a big brand like Harley-Davidson have launched their respective electric motorcycles in India. So, what can we expect from Royal Enfield?

“Just because there was a downturn, we did not cut down on our capex. I don’t think we’ll spend any more on any large (facility). Most of our capex will go into capability building, new products, electric and other stuff.”
Vinod Dasari, CEO, Royal Enfield to The Economic Times

Dasari also mentioned that the company’s UK Technology Centre has been tasked with new product development and the same has retrofitted an existing product with an electric drivetrain which Dasari claims to have ridden.

Although currently the brand is focused on launching the BS-VI versions of its existing fleet especially updates to the Royal Enfield Thunderbird and the Royal Enfield Classic, but electric is definitely in the pipeline.

Royal Enfield’s future product strategy is likely to include electric vehicles but we cannot say when exactly the company will put one into production.
