It's not really old wine in a new bottle. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is an all-new car, which replaces the Hyundai Grand i10 globally, but in India, it will sell alongside the older Grand i10 in the hope of chalking up volumes for Hyundai.

The Hyundai Grand i10 has been launched in 10 variants, including petrol and diesel with AMT (automatic) and manual transmission options. Prices range between Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 7.99 lakh ex-showroom.

To differentiate the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios from its older sibling the Hyundai Grand i10, Hyundai has loaded the new car with more features (Nios means more by the way). It has also upgraded the engine options, making the 1.2 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine BS-6 compliant, while the diesel 1.2, three-cylinder engine has got a capacity increase from the earlier 1.1 litre and is BS-6 ready. It will be fully BS-6 compliant next year, but expect a steep hike in prices.

Hyundai has always been know to load its cars with features and the Grand i10 Nios is no different. To make sure it can effectively compete with Maruti's Wagon-R and Ignis on one end as well as the Maruti Swift on the other, Hyundai has loaded the Grand i10 Nios with features.

The car gets wireless charging for your phones, comes with automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button ignition, rear-view camera, rear AC vents, and a digital-analog instrument panel with more information on display.

The audio system is from Arkamys with an 8-inch screen built into the dash. It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as takes voice commands. For this segment, this is quite a bit on offer. Power folding mirrors, projector headlamps, rear wiper and demister, and 15-inch diamond cut alloys are all part of the top-spec variant.

Two airbags, ABS, parking sensors and seat belt warnings are standard on all variants.

However, the price point isn’t exactly cheap. It is about Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh more expensive compared to the Maruti Wagon-R variant for variant (among petrol cars) and almost as much as the Maruti Suzuki Swift when you look at diesel cars.

Hyundai is offering a minimum three-year or 100,000 Km warranty going up to five years or 40,000 Km, offering customers different packages depending on how many kilometres they drive annually.

Updated Engine Options

Hyundai has updated its four-cylinder 1.2 litre petrol engine to meet BS-6 emission standards. This "Kappa" engine is also used in the i20 and the Xcent. The engine puts out 83 PS of power and 114 Nm of torque. It comes with a five-speed manual transmission in all four variants - Era, Magna, Sportz and Asta.

There is also a five-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) option in the Magna and Sportz variants, but not on the top-end Asta. Claimed mileage is 20.7 Kmpl.

For the diesel Grand i10 Nios, Hyundai has increased the capacity slightly. It comes with a three-cylinder, 1.2 litre (1,185 cc) diesel engine that puts out 75 PS of power and 190 Nm of torque. The diesel also gets a 5-speed AMT on the Sportz variant. It has a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.2 Kmpl.

The diesel engine is BS-6 ready, but expect prices to be bumped up post March 2020, when it becomes fully compliant with new emission norms, owing to the addition of a diesel particulate filter and revised exhaust systems.

Unlike Maruti, Hyundai plans to continue offering diesel variants of the car post April 2020, while Maruti will be discontinuing most of its small 1.3 litre diesel offerings.
