Dismissing the Congress’ objection to attempts at government formation in Goa, the BJP said on Tuesday that the opposition party had failed to muster the numbers to do so.
Speaking to the media, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said: “Congress has no basis to form government in Goa".
Backing the governor’s decision, he cited examples from the past when larger coalitions were favoured over parties getting more seats.
The Governor’s decision is backed by precedents from the past. This happened in Jharkhand in 2005 against us when Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was called to form the government as it had a larger coalition... It happened in Delhi in 2013 when Aam Aadmi Party with the backing of Congress formed the government after we got more seats than them in the elections.
Jaitley’s words were echoed by Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who speaking outside the Parliament, said that the Congress has no “moral right to criticise the BJP”.
It did not allow the largest party to form the government (in the past). They have no moral right to criticise... If anyone in the country has violated democratic tradition, it is the Congress only.
The Congress and its allies staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha to protest the efforts to establish a BJP government in Goa and Manipur, where the Congress had emerged as the largest party.
