Openers Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal helped Bangladesh to get to 8/0 in 1.5 overs which means Pakistan have been knocked out of the ICC World Cup.
After posting 315/9 in their 50 overs, the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan needed to bowl Bangladesh out for 7 to go ahead of New Zealand in the Net Run Rate.
This also means that the four teams going into the playoffs of the Cricket World Cup are India, Australia, England and New Zealand.
In a press conference on the eve of the tournament, Pakistani skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed had said the team was optimistic and would be trying to score 500 runs.
“We will give it our best but we have to be realistic. If we make 500 or 400 runs, we can surely hope that the opposition team can get out on 50. We will try our best. It is not a hidden fact that we have to make 500-550 runs and win by a margin of 316 runs. We have to be realistic but we will try our best,” Sarfaraz had said.
The huge score Pakistan required looked unlikely despite a 100-ball 100 from opener Imam-ul-Haq, who was out in rare fashion by hitting his own wicket two balls after reaching his maiden World Cup century.
No. 3 Babar Azam hit 96 in 98 deliveries, including 11 boundaries, four more than Imam.
Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed retired hurt on 2 but bravely returned for the last ball of the innings and hit a single to deny Mustafizur Rahman his hat trick.
Babar was denied his second century of the tournament when he fell to a yorker from Mohammad Saifuddin that trapped him lbw. He failed with his review and it left Pakistan at 180-2 after 32 overs.
Babar scored 474 runs in the group stage, a record by a Pakistan batter at a single edition of the World Cup. He came into the game needing 60 to overtake Javed Miandad's 437 total in 1992.
Mustafizur finished with 5-75 off 10 overs.
Earlier, Pakistan had delayed their likely Cricket World Cup exit by winning the toss and choosing to bat against Bangladesh in their group match at Lord's. And after crawling to 315/9 in their 50 overs, they once again managed to just about stay alive in the tournament.
But with the Bangladesh openers crossing the 7-run mark, their chances of reaching the knockout stage ended.
