The world number one all-rounder and former Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan broke a few records as he came up with a match-winning performance against Afghanistan on Monday, 24 June.
He became the first Bangladesh cricketer to score 1,000 World Cup runs and the first cricketer to score over 400 runs and picked up 10 wickets in a single edition of the World Cup.
As if this wasn’t enough, Shakib broke another record in the game as he became the first Bangladesh cricketer to score a fifty and pick up five wickets in the same match.
As Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 62 runs, it was all about Shakib and his exploits at Southampton.
Meanwhile, wishes flooded in from Twitter for left-hander who led Bangladesh to their third win at the tournament that took them to the fifth position in the points table.
Shakib’s consistency with the bat was the most important feature of his overall performance so far in the tournament. He has scored fifty plus scores in all the games barring the one against Australia where he scored 41.
Also he brought out his best with the ball, just when his team needed him. His five-wicket haul stifled the Afghan batsmen from getting any kind of momentum in their chase as they fell well sort at the end.
Bangladesh now have two games left in the tournament. They play India next on 2 July and face Pakistan in their last and final game on 5 July at Lord’s. Ideally, they will need to win both the games to give themselves a real chance of making it to the last four.
