India opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the Cricket World Cup on Wednesday because of a broken left thumb.

Tests showed Dhawan sustained a fracture when he was hit on the hand off a rising delivery by Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins in a group game on June 9. Dhawan will remain in a cast until the middle of July, India said.

Rishabh Pant, who has been on standby, will replace Dhawan in the squad.

In an emotional video he shared on social media, Dhawan talked about his injury and wished the Indian team luck for the rest of the campaign.

“Hi everyone, just wanted to make a video to show gratitude towards your prayers and love that you have been sharing at me. Really appreciate it and unfortunately my thumb wont be recovering on time. I really wanted to play and represent my country but its time for me to go back and recover well.”

He further urged the fans to keep supporting the Indian team throughout the World Cup. “Keep praying for us, keep supporting us. Your prayers are very very important and very dear to us. Thank you all again for all your support and love. Love you all. Take care,” Dhawan concluded saying.

Dhawan suffered the injury after being hit by a Pat Cummins delivery during his 109-ball 117 knock against Australia in the World Cup. While the X-ray didn't show any fracture, CT scan revealed otherwise and Dhawan was taken to a specialist for further assessment and eventually ruled out of the tournament.
