England's openers Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns got the team to the perfect start after their bowlers bundled India out for 78 on Day 1 of the Headingley Test.

At Stumps, the home team was 120 without the loss of the wicket, already leading India by 42 runs on Day 1 of the third Test.

Earlier in the day, India were bowled out for 78 with opener Rohit Sharma, with 19, and Ajinkya Rahane with his 18 being the top-scorers of the innings after Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first in Leeds.

Veteran pacer James Anderson picked the wickets of KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, all before completing his 6th over of the morning while Ollie Robinson dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant on either side of the Lunch break to put India on the mat.

After the high octane first hour when India's top order fell apart on Day 1, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma looked to drop anchor. Rahane though did not survive long, falling at the stroke of Lunch as Jos Buttler claimed a fourth catch and Ollie Robinson got his first scalp. Soon after the break, Pant was caught behind off Robinson as Jos Buttler took his fifth catch of the innings.

At the fall of Pant's wicket, India's score stood at 58/5 but two great overs by Sam Curran and Craig Overton saw four Indian wickets fall as the team was reduced to 74/9 with Rohit Sharma, Shami, Bumrah and Jadeja losing their wickets.

The final wicket stand between Ishant Sharma and Siraj lasted 19 deliveries and added 11 runs to the tally before Overton picked his third wicket of the innings.

Anderson struck in the very first over and dismissed India's top scorer so far KL Rahul for a four-ball duck. Rahul, looking for the expansive drive early on, edged it to the keeper and Jos Buttler took an easy catch.

In the fifth over of the innings, as the clouds started clearing up, Anderson bowled an out-swinger to Cheteshwar Pujara, who got sucked into poking it at and the keeper completed a second catch to give England another wicket.

Before this Test, Pujara had registered two scores of less than 10 in four innings, with 45 at Lord's being the highest of the lot.

In walked Kohli and along with Rohit Sharma looked to steady the ship. Just as the duo looked like they had settled in, Anderson struck, again. Kohli went for the cover drive and Anderson's out-swinger took the edge through to Jos Buttler.

India at 21/3 were in quite a spot of bother.

This brought the experienced duo of Rohit and Ajinkya Rahane together in the middle with England looking to pick a fourth wicket.

Rahane and Rohit, under pressure, were watchful and tried to cut out the risky shots.

Rahane and Rohit put on 35 runs, almost playing out the session. England though had the last laugh in the morning as Robinson dismissed Rahane for 18 on the stroke of lunch, caught behind by Buttler.

India went into Lunch at 56/4 on Day 1 with Rohit (15*) set to be joined by Rishabh Pant.

After lunch the duo of Pant and Rohit looked to bide time but England's bowlers were at their menacing best. Robinson got one to move away from Pant, who edged it to Buttler and was dismissed for 2 in the 30th over.
