Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani was in the stands at the Old Trafford cricket stadium in Manchester on Tuesday, 18 June, to cheer the national team on during their ICC World Cup clash against hosts England.

The president, who met with British Prime Minister Theresa May earlier in the day, will be hoping to motivate the Afghan boys who are currently last in the World Cup points table with a net run rate of -1.638.

The team really came out with flying colours in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers where they beat the likes of West Indies and Ireland to make it through to the main event.

In the World Cup so far, however, they have been not been able to produce that same performance and are yet to win a game. They lost their first match to Australia in a one-sided contest.

Against Sri Lanka in their next match, they managed to be in the hunt till the final overs, but the Lankan Lions managed to snatch victory away from them.

They lost their next two matches against New Zealand and South Africa, and are now facing the tough hosts England.

Going forward in the tournament, they will have to face India in their next match in Southampton on 22 June after which they play against Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies.
