West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell was ruled out from the ICC 2019 World Cup on 24 June after failing to overcome a left knee injury that curtailed his bowling action in the tournament.

The ICC officially announced the development on their Twitter handle on the same day. It was a huge blow for the Windies, whose semi-final hopes have taken a dip after their 5-run loss against the Kiwis in their previous game.

West Indies next play India in a must-win clash without their premier all-rounder who had a successful surgery of his injured knee on Wednesday, 26 June.

Russell posted a photo on Instagram after his operation saying ‘Surgery was a success thanks for the kind words from everyone!’

In the four matches out of six he played in the World Cup, Russell managed just 36 runs at an average of 12. With the ball in hand, he had picked up five wickets at an economy rate of 5.31.

He bowled in every game that he played against Pakistan, England, Australia, Bangladesh and struggled in each of them. Against Bangladesh, however, he limped off the field after bowling just six overs.

Russell played through the IPL with multiple injuries for Kolkata Knight Riders and came into the World Cup with those injuries.

West Indies are currently languishing at the seventh position in the points table with just one win from six games.
