Ashwin Can be The All-rounder We Are Looking for: Kohli

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli expressed his confidence in Ravichandran Ashwin’s batting abilities and said that there is no reason why the Tamil Nadu tweaker can’t be the all-rounder that the Indian team is looking for in longer version.

“Ashwin, Bhuvi and Bhajji are all handy with the bat. Ashwin has a Test average of 40 and I cannot see that why he can’t be that all-rounder for us. That’s the challenge. Giving people goals and asking them to improve in certain aspects where the team requires,” Kohli told mediapersons at the pre-departure press conference ahead of three-Test series in Sri lanka.

Kohli again stressed that he would like to play five bowlers in order to give the team a chance to take 20 wickets and also that three spinners could be a reality during the series.

You need to play a stronger bowling side in order to win Test matches and it’s more exciting and satisfying as well. Yes, that’s a possibility (three spinners). The idea is to take 20 wickets. I strongly believe that you need to your best bowlers to play in order to give your team a chance to do that.

Time for Excuses Over, Team is Ready for Challenges: Rohit

Middle-order batsmen Rohit Sharma, on Sunday, said the time for giving excuses for India’s mediocre performances in overseas Test matches is long over and the team is now ready to take up the challenges.

Rohit said the learning phase for the Virat Kohli-led side, post the transition phase, is long over and the team is now ready to perform with the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

“In the next couple of years we are going to play a lot of cricket in the sub-continent and it’s going to be a big challenge for us. The way we responded to Test cricket in the last couple of years is really good. We have shown positive intent which is always good for an young and upcoming team. All the guys in the team have now played more than 10 Test matches, so we can’t give any excuses anymore,” Rohit told reporters before leaving for Sri Lanka.

Indian Women bag Silver at World Archery Championships

Indian women’s recurve team squandered a two-set lead and went down to top seed Russians in the shoot-off to bag a silver medal at the World Archery Championships.

The trio of Deepika Kumari, Laxmirani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly put pressure on the Russians opening up a 4-0 lead but could not wrap the issue as they lost the next two sets before going down in the shoot-off 27-28.

India thus picked their second silver in the ongoing World Archery Championships where compound archer Rajat Chauhan opened the account with a historic individual medal on Saturday.

Ervine Guides Zimbabwe to Superb Win Over New Zealand

Craig Ervine’s maiden century upstaged Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson’s record-breaking exploits as Zimbabwe stunned New Zealand by seven wickets in the first one-day international at Harare Sports Club.

Taylor and Williamson continued their remarkable run of form as New Zealand racked up 303 for four, only for Ervine’s dashing innings to carry Zimbabwe to victory with six balls to spare.

The 29-year-old finished unbeaten on 130 from just 108 deliveries as the hosts chased more than 300 for just the second time in an ODI.

Arsenal Beat Chelsea To Win Community Shield

FA Cup winners Arsenal beat EPL champions Chelsea 1-0 in England’s Community Shield season curtain-raiser at Wembley on Sunday to end a long wait for victory over their London rivals.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s brilliant goal after 24 minutes settled the result in the gunners favour. The 21-year-old received a pass from Theo Walcott and cut inside Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of Thibaut Courtois’ goal.

It was the first time in 14 attempts that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had got the better of Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho.

Nadal Claims 67th Career Title With Hamburg Open Victory

Rafael Nadal won his 67th career title with a 7-5 7-5 victory against dangerous Italian Fabio Fognini in the final of the Hamburg Open on Sunday.

Nadal, whose previous air of invincibility on clay has begun to evaporate, hit just six winners and 15 unforced errors in an evenly contested opening set.

Nadal appeared to have gained the upper hand early in the second set and broke en route to a 3-1 lead but Fognini roared back with successive breaks to take a 4-3 lead.

However, Fognini ultimately succumbed to defeat when he blazed a forehand long before a clearly emotional Nadal fell to his knees and saluted the crowd after the final point.
