July 21st marks the birthdays of two former Indian cricketers, Chetan Chauhan and Chandu Borde. Chetan, an opening batsman from late 1960’s, and Chandu, a decent all-rounder from early 1950’s, have been instrumental in shaping Indian cricket during the careers.

Chetan Chauhan

  • Chetan’s highest score of 97 came against Australia in Adelaide, 1981. He also holds the record for scoring the most number of test runs without registering a hundred.
  • The right-handed batsman lasted for 40 test matches, where he scored 2084 runs with an average of 31.57. He scored 16 half-centuries during his playing span of 12 years.
  • He also represented Delhi and Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy. Chetan was part of Delhi’s Ranji Trophy winning teams on three occasions (1978, 1979 and 1981).

Chandu Borde

  • Chandu scored 12805 runs and took 331 wickets in his First-Class career spanning 20 years.
  • He was India’s top run-getter in two home series against the West Indies. He scored 281 runs in the 4-Test series in 1958-59 & 345 runs in the 3-Test series in 1966-67.
  • Chandu’s test career saw him scoring 5 centuries and 18 half-centuries in the 55 matches played. He scored 3061 runs at a healthy average of 35.59.
  • Chandu Borde was elected as the chairman of selectors for five seasons (1984, 1985, 1999, 2001 and 2002).
