Last Chance for Rio Ticket: Mary Kom, Sarita at World C’ships
A total of 12 qualifying spots are up for grabs in 3 categories.
12 women boxers can confirm their tickets to the Rio Olympics by the end of this week at the World Women’s Boxing Championship. Hoping to be among them are three Indians; MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi and Pooja Rani.
In the draws announced on Wednesday, five-time champion Mary Kom (51kg) has been given a first round match against Sweden’s Juliana Soderstrom while Sarita and Pooja will comepete in the other two Olympics qualifying categories - 60kg, and 75kg.
The boxers will have to reach at least the semifinal in the three categories to make the cut for Rio.
Mary Kom, a London Olympics bronze-medallist and Asian Games gold-medallist who is eyeing a record sixth gold in the event, will be in action tomorrow along with and Asiad bronze-winner Sarita. Sarita will be up against Belarus’ Ala Yarshevich and if she wins the contest, the Manipuri will square off against Mexico’s Victoria Torres. Pooja, on the other hand, got a first-round bye and will be squaring off against Ukraine’s Mariya Borusta on May 20.
