Katrina, Hema on Salman’s Appointment as Rio Olympics Ambassador
Suniel Shetty, Katrina Kaif comment on debate over Salman Khan’s appointment as Olympic Ambassador
The Indian Olympics Committee’s decision to appoint Salman Khan as the ambassador for the Rio 2016 Olympics was met with mixed reactions from prominent members of the film industry and sportspersons.
Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and former athlete Milkha Singh were amongst the first to express their outrage over the issue.
Reacting to Milkha Singh’s criticism of the decision, Salman’s father Salim Khan said in a Twitter post, “Salman may not have competed but is an A-list swimmer, cyclist and weightlifter. Sportsmen are performing because of sports lovers like us.
“Taking on Singh, Salim said, “Milkha ji, it’s not Bollywood industry but the Indian film industry which is the largest in the world.” The former scriptwriter taunted Singh referring to his biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, as he wrote, “The same industry which resurrected you from fading away in oblivion.
With Khan’s tumultuous history of domestic abuse, road rage and allegations of vehicular manslaughter, opposers were not short of reasons to object this move. Furthered by the fact that the obvious choice for an Olympic Ambassador should be a sportsperson.
However, Khan’s loyal fan following stood by him, even as the oppositions rained in.
Fellow actors and Bollywood personalities expressed their opinions on the issue and supported the move by the Olympics Committee.
Actor Raza Murad also voiced his opinion, asking sportspersons to be grateful to the film industry.
BJP MP and actress Hema Malini supported the decision of the Indian Olympic Association(IOA), saying Salman’s popularity is being utilised for a good cause.
Suniel Shetty said that Bollywood helps the sports industry and the move should not be perceived in a negative light.
Why bash a Bollywood star? Let’s not look at things negatively. It was Farhan Akhtar who helped the Milkha biopic (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – based on the life of Milkha Singh) become a legendary film. Bollywood is a medium like sports and if you can get oil and water to mix it would be an explosive combo.Suniel Shetty, Actor
Perhaps the most hilarious and appropriate reaction came from Khan’s ex, Katrina Kaif who said, “Salman ko leke controversy hai...woh naya cheez hai kya?” (there’s nothing new about a Salman being involved in a controversy), when asked about the debacle.
