It was a poor day at the office for Virat Kohli, the batsman. But thankfully for him, his teammate AB de Villiers carried Royal Challengers Bangalore’s innings at the Wankhede stadium on Monday, 15 April, with a 51-ball 75.

RCB now need a 172 runs to defeat Mumbai Indians, and win their second straight match after slumping to six back-to-back losses in IPL 2019.

Opening the innings, captain Kohli fell to Jason Behrendorff for just 8 in the third over of the match. His fellow opener Parthiv struck three fours and a six off Behrendoff in the fifth over from which RCB amassed 19 runs. But he threw his wicket away, giving a dolly to Suryakumar Yadav off Hardik Pandya (1/21), reducing RCB to 49/2 in 7 overs..

Moeen Ali then combined with ABD to stitch a 95-run stand, ensuring the Royal Challengers put up a challenging total against the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai.

The South African star ABD stamped his authority, hammering six fours and four sixes, as he completed his half century in 41 balls. Ali was a little bit more aggressive than de Villiers as he hit five sixes and a lone boundary as the two took the MI attack to cleaners.

Ali initially played second fiddle but later upped the ante. He was particularly severe on Australian pacer Jason Behrendoff (1/49), whom he hit for two sixes and a four in the 16th over, which fetched 17 runs for RCB.

De Villiers, who took time to settle, then showed his class, as he hit round the park.

However, veteran Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Maliga (4/31) pegged the visiting side back by removing Ali for 50 (off 32 balls), and then Marcus Stoinis (0), in the 18th over.

A run-out mess on the second delivery of the final over bowled by Malinga saw ABD walking back to the hut. He then removed Akshdeep Nath in the next ball, and Pawan Negi a ball later as RCB went from 168/4 to 171/4 in 20 overs.
