Royal Challengers Bangalore’s four-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad not only helped the side end their forgetful IPL campaign on a winning note, but they kind of spoiled the party for the Hyderabad outfit.

What this means is that now Sunrisers Hyderabad’s future in IPL 2019 are no longer in their hands. If Kolkata Knight Riders win their last game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium on Sunday they are through to the playoffs. So, Kane Williamson and Co are now at the mercy of Mumbai Indians.

KKR are tied on 12 points with Sunrisers Hyderabad but are placed fifth in the points table due to an inferior run-rate. However after Sunrisers’ loss in their final league game, a win would take Kolkata to 14 points and and the whole net run-rate debate would cease to exit as Kolkata would be the fourth team to make it to the playoffs.

The tournament which has been outstanding so far will now will have to wait for the final day of the league stage to determine who will join Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians at the top.

SRH or KKR?

Earlier in the day, Rajasthan’s loss to Delhi meant that they are no longer in contention for the playoffs. Apart from that, it had also made the fight for the playoffs a two-horse race.

But now, Sunrisers have only themselves to be blamed for the situation they are in. Coming into the match, a win was enough for Hyderabad to make Sunday’s encounter between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders inconsequential.

Courtesy the exploits of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow earlier in the season, Sunrisers (+0.653) had an almost unbeatable Net Run Rate advantage over Kolkata (+0.173) before the match on Saturday.

What Rules Say

The team with the highest number of points shall be at the top of the table and the team with the lowest shall be at the bottom.

Where teams have an equal number of points their relative positions shall be determined by the following:

  • The team with the most wins in matches in the League during the season will be placed in the higher position.
  • If there are teams with equal points and equal wins during the season, then in such case the team with the higher net run rate (as calculated in clause 16.12 below) will be placed in the higher position.
