A rare match in this season that did not drastically affect the points table, Delhi Daredevils defeated Chennai Super Kings by 34 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi on Friday.
Chasing 163 in a gradually slowing pitch proved to be difficult for the men in yellow as they failed to execute the big shots in the final overs and eventually ended up with 128/6 in their 20 overs.
The strong middle order of CSK were kept in check by a combined effort of Amit Mishra, Trent Boult and Harshal Patel who only conceded 35 runs from the last 5 overs.
On a day where CSK batsmen found it difficult to middle the ball, Rayudu (50) was the lone Chennai batsman who scored above 30 runs.
Earlier, a late onslaught from Delhi Daredevils, spearheaded by Harshal Patel (36) and Vijay Shankar (36) helped Delhi post a challenging total. Patel and Shankar scored 26 runs in the last over off Dwayne Bravo to put Delhi above par score. CSK’s death bowling woes continues even in the fag end of the league as Bravo conceded 52 runs off his 4 overs.
The match has endangered Chennai’s chances of taking over the top spot from Sunrisers Hyderabad, and makes their next match a crucial tie to win if they want additional cushioning in the play-offs.
Already out of the tournament, Delhi Daredevils’ next match can prove to be a party spoiler for the Mumbai Indians, who are looking to break into the top four in the standings.
