Mumbai Indians (MI) won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that looked like an absolute batting paradise. Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) skipper MS Dhoni, however, differed and was happy to bowl first as he expected the pitch to remain the same all throughout.

Rohit’s decision to bat first was proved wrong by RPS bowlers as Ishant Sharma picked up the first wicket of the tournament right off his first delivery. Rohit Sharma was caught LBW off Sharma, who consistently bowled at a pace exceeding 140 kmph.

Lendl Simmons and Hardik Pandya tried steading the MI innings after the initial blow, but Ishant continued his demolishing spree and bowled Simmons.

Australian Mitchell Marsh then came in and picked two wickets of his first over. Pandya caught behind and Jos Buttler caught in the slips.

Things worked fine for Dhoni, as even Rajat Bhatia who replaced Ishant also picked up a wicket of his first delivery. Pollard was caught palm before the wicket. Even leg break bowler M Ashwin picked a wicket of his first delivery and MI remained struggling at a score of 51 for 6 at the end of 10 overs.

The agony continued for MI as even Ashwin picked up a wicket of his first delivery, dismissing Ambati Rayudu for 22, the highest so far for MI. Four bowlers have picked up wickets on their first delivery for RPS.

Tailenders Harbhajan Singh and Vinay Kumar knocked a few balls out of the boundary to help MI go past the 100 mark. Of the duo, Harbhajan played his classical hard hitting game scoring 45 of 30 balls which included 7 fours and a six.

Ishant Sharma and Mitchell Marsh were the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets each. It was however Rajat Bhatiya who was the most clinical for RPS as he gave away just 10 runs in his stipulated 4 overs.

Riding on Harbhajan’s heroics, MI posted a total of 121-8

Chasing 122 to win, Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis got RPS off to a really good start. Both the openers survived a few initial scares but added 78 for the first wicket.

The duo brought up the 50 for Pune in just 5.5 overs at a run rate of 6.05 per over.

The bowling was largely disappointing for MI, especially with pace bowlers giving away a lot of runs. They also gave away quite a few extras with Vinay Kumar bowling three wides in two overs.
