On the day India and Australia start the three-match T20 series in Ranchi, the visiting team announced that their skipper Steve Smith will be pulling out of the series.

Smith had picked up a niggle on his right shoulder while fielding in the fifth ODI at Nagpur and following an MRI scan on Thursday, Cricket Australia confirm that he has been advised rest and will be returning home.

In Smith’s absence, David Warner will be captaining the T20 side and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis will take his spot in the squad.

Team Doctor Richard Saw said, "He has had an MRI scan which has excluded serious injury, but we believe the best course of action is for him to not continue to aggravate his shoulder and allow it to recover."

"He will have further investigation upon his return to Australia but we remain confident he will be available for the start of the Sheffield Shield season."
