After missing the ongoing ODI series due to contractual disputes with their board, West Indies stars Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard are back in the squad for the only T20 against India. ODI captain Jason Holder has been rested for the match and all-round Carlos Brathwaite will be leading the West Indian T20 team.

The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies, on 5 July, named the 13-man squad for the Finolex Pipes T20 International to be played at the Sabina Park on 9 July.

The star opening batsman Gayle is the highest run-scorer for West Indies with 1,519 runs (average 35.32, strike rate 145.49), including two centuries. He will be playing his first T20 International at Sabina Park.

On the squad, Cricket West Indies Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne said:

We welcome Chris back to the T20 squad. He is the most prolific batsman in this format and will add value to our team at the top of the order. He will get the chance to play on his home ground and against a top-quality Indian team.  This squad has a good mix – experience within the batting and bowling – it is a well-balanced squad. Again, this is an opportunity for the young players to showcase their talent and for the experience players to perform and help nurture the young players.

While Gayle, Pollard and Narine were all indeed fit and available, they missed the ODIs due to the long-standing contractual disputes between the West Indies’ cricket board and its players.

Based on a new policy, Cricket West Indies (CWI) only select players for international outings if they have played a domestic tournament in the same format. While most stars do play the T20 Caribbean Premier League and are thus available for selection in the shortest format, one-day and Test formats domestic tournaments clash with leagues across the world – much more lucrative leagues.
