Off-spinner Ravi Ashwin took four wickets and fast bowler Umesh Yadav picked up three as India maintained its strong grip on the second test against South Africa after day three on Saturday.

South Africa, replying to the home team's massive 601/5 declared, was bowled out for 275 in its first innings but India decided to delay a decision on whether to enforce the follow-on until Sunday.

Keshav Maharaj shrugged off a sore shoulder, sustained while fielding on day two, to hit 72 down the order for the visitors. He shared a stand of 109 for the ninth wicket with Vernon Philander (44 not out).

Captain’s Knock From Faf

  • Faf du Plessis (64) has registered his highest score in six Tests in India, eclipsing the 55 in the first innings of the Visakhapatnam Test.
  • du Plessis' performance in Tests in India is mediocre, aggregating 192 in ten innings at an average of 19.20.
  • This was du Plessis' fourth fifty against India is his 21st in Tests.
  • During the course of his superb knock of 64, du Plessis has completed his 2,000 runs as captain - his tally being 2058 runs at an average of 44.73 in 31 Tests, including five hundreds and 13 fifties.

  • TB de Bruyn (30) has posted his highest score vs India in Tests, eclipsing the 10 in     the second innings of the Visakhapatnam Test.
  • Bruyn's only innings of fifty-plus in 21 innings in Tests remains the 101 vs Sri Lanka at Colombo, SSC in July 2018.
  • Quinton de Kock, after playing three consecutive innings of 50-plus on this tour - 52 at Mohali & 79 not out Bengaluru in T20Is and 111 in the first innings of the     Visakhapatnam Test, has made 0 in the second innings and 31 in the Pune Test.
  • Keshav Maharaj (72) has posted his highest Test score - his maiden fifty in Tests,     outstripping the 45 vs Australia at Johannesburg in 2018.
  • Vernon Philander (44 not out) has recorded his highest score in Tests in India.     Interestingly, he had registered a PAIR in the Visakhapatnam Test.
  • Maharaj and Philander were involved in a stand of 109 for the ninth wicket - South Africa's first century stand against India in Tests - their fifth century stand for this wicket-position in Tests.

India’s Bowlers

  • Umesh Yadav (3/37) has produced his second best bowling performance against South Africa in Tests behind the 3 for 9 in the 2015-16 Delhi Test.
  • Ravichandra Ashwin has completed 50 wickets (ave.18.52) against South Africa in nine Tests. He is the fourth Indian bowler after Anil Kumble (84), Javagal Srinath (64) and Harbhajan Singh (60) to achieve the feat.
