India took giant strides towards winning their first-ever series on Australian soil in seven decades by retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 137-run win in the third Test on Sunday, 30 December.

Here’s a look at 8 interesting facts and numbers from India’s win at the MCG.

  1. With this win, India have taken an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match Test series. Hence, the visitors are now assured of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the previous series in 2016-17.
  2. The victory at Melbourne was India’s 150th Test win and also their first at the iconic MCG after 37 long years when Sunil Gavaskar's men beat Greg Chappell's side in the 1980-81 series.
  3. A 31-run win in the opening Test at Adelaide followed by a victory at Melbourne, marks the first time since 1977-78 that India have won two Tests in Australia.
  4. With the win in Melbourne, Virat Kohli equalled Sourav Ganguly's record of 11 overseas Test wins – the most by an Indian captain.
  5. Jasprit Bumrah's 9/86 in the Melbourne Test, which won him his first Man of the Match award in Test cricket, were the best match figures by an Indian pacer in Test matches in Australia.
  6. The 25-year-old has also finished his debut year in Test cricket with 48 wickets in 9 matches (all overseas), which include fifers in South Africa, England and Australia.
  7. Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami finished 2018 with 134 away wickets (Bumrah 48, Ishant 40 and Shami 46), eclipsing the 34-year-old record that stood in the name of the fearsome West Indies trio of Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Joel Garner (130 wickets in away tours in 1984).
  8. Ishant Sharma got rid of Nathan Lyon (7) – the final wicket of the match – caught behind as Rishabh Pant took his 20th dismissal in this series, which is highest by any Indian wicket-keeper.
