At 42 years and 7 days, Darren Stevens of Kent made history on Monday, 16 September to become the oldest cricketer to hit a double century in first-class cricket.

Earlier, the record was held by Walter Keeton, who achieved the feat in 1949.

Coming out to bat at a difficult time with his side reeling at 39/5 against Yorkshire in Headingley, Stevens scored a double century at a strike rate of 105.33. In the process, he added 346 runs with his captain Sam Billings.

Stevens finished with 237 off 225 balls, which included 28 fours and nine sixes. Meanwhile, Billings remained not-out on 138.

Apart from the record, Steven went past his previous best of 208, which came against Glamorgan in 2005.

The 346-run stand between Stevens and Billings is the highest partnership in the County Championship this season. It also eclipsed the record-breaking sixth wicket stand between Aravinda de Silva and Mark Ealham for Kent in 1995. The duo had scored 315 runs against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

The 346-run partnership also became the highest partnership at Headingley.

Steven had his share of luck en route his first hundred since 2017. He was dropped twice, first when he was on 149 and then on 156.

Stevens was due to leave Kent after 15 years following next week's game against Hampshire but thanks to his timely double ton Kent is planning to discuss a new deal with all-rounder. Not only with the bat, Steven is having a great time with the ball too. In his previous game against Nottinghamshire, Steven picked up 10 wickets, which were two five-wicket hauls.
