Considered just a Test specialist, Saurashtra opener Cheteshwar Pujara proved a lot of critics wrong with his maiden T20 century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Thursday, 21 February.

However, the Indian opener’s landmark hundred – also the first by a Saurashtra cricketer – went in vain as his team lost to the Railways by 5 wickets in their tournament opener.

After being put in to bat, Saurashtra put up a total of 188/3 in 20 overs, courtesy opener Pujara’s unbeaten 100 off 61 balls. Wicketkeeper and opener Harvik Desai scored 34 (off 24 balls) while Robin Uthappa added 46 runs off 31 balls.

However, Anureet Singh-led Railways reached their target with 5 wickets in hand, and 2 balls remaining.

After a successful tour of Australia, Pujara had led his domestic team to their third Ranji Trophy final, scoring an unbeaten 131 off 266 balls in the semis against Karnataka. The 31-year-old however failed with the bat in the summit clash that his team went on to lose against the defending champions Vidarbha.

Like the previous edition, Pujara went unsold in this year’s auction for the Indian Premier League.
