India’s Rohan Bopanna and Romania’s Florin Mergea were tested by Marin Draganja and Nikola Mektic before advancing to the second round of the Wimbledon championships on Friday.

The sixth seeded Indo-Romanian pair laboured to a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) win over the unseeded Croatians.

The 80-minute match featured only one break that came Bopanna and Mergea’s way in the 11th game of the opening set.

Bopanna and Mergea went up 40-0 on their opponents’ serve and converted their third chance. They served out the set in the next game.

The second too was very tight with both pairs holding serves. Eventually it was settled in the tie-breaker which was also tied at 6-6 at one time.

Thereafter, Bopanna and Mergea won two straight points to seal their second round berth.

Leander Paes and Marcin Matkowski had a relatively easier first round match as compared to Bopanna and Mergea. The Indo-Polish pair breezed past Janko Tipsarevic and Lu Yen-hsun with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.

Paes and Matkowski broke their opponent’s serve twice in the first set and took a 5-0 lead before their opponents managed to hold their serve in the sixth game. However, the Indo-Polish pair sealed the first set in the next game.

In the second set, Paes and Matkowski broke their opponent’s serve in the fifth game and took a 3-2 lead. Thereafter they held their serve throughout the match and wrapped up the second set after breaking their opponents in the final game.
