It looks like the celebrations would be continuing in full-flow for Vinesh Phogat, who scripted history recently by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Games!

Just moments after she landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday, 25 August, the wrestler got engaged to her long-time boyfriend Somvir Rathi, who used to be a Greco-Roman national wrestler.

The rings were reportedly exchanged at the parking lot near the airport, with family and friends, including Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat, present for the occasion. A cake-cutting ceremony followed suit.

Speaking about the engagement ceremony, Vinesh – who also happened to turn 24 on 25 August – told The Times of India:

...For the last 4-5 years, it has so been happening that I was losing bouts just before my birthday. This time, after securing the Asiad gold medal, we wanted to celebrate the win in a grand way. Thus, this engagement at the airport.

According to report by The Tribune, the engagement happening outside the airport was a result of Somvir wanting to solemnise the ceremony on Saturday itself.

Vinesh Phogat created history on 20 August by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games, brushing aside her rivals with remarkable ease in the 50 kg category in Jakarta.

Vinesh had earlier won a bronze medal in the 48 kg category at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Vinesh also won back-to-back gold medals in Glasgow and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games this year.
