Despite an injury, India’s 21-year-old Wonder Woman Swapna Barman scripted history as she became the first-ever Indian Heptathlete to win a gold at the Asian Games.
Barman produced the best performance of her career as she aggregated 6026 points from seven events spread over two days. She achieved the feat with a taped right cheek and ill-fitted shoes.
Barman was born with 12 toes which makes it near impossible for her to wear standard competition footwear.
I have been having this pain ever since I started competing. I make do with normal five-toed shoes but it makes me severely uncomfortable.Swapna Barman to PTI
Here’s is a re-look at the Heptathlete in photos:
Overcame Hurdles Despite all Odds
And Inched Closer to Victory
With a Clear Eye on the Target
And Minor Disappointments
She Took the Last Plunge...
And Emerged Victorious!

PM Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore tweeted congratulatory messages to the star almost immediately after she conquered the world.
Here’s to many more golds to this Jalpaiguri star and to many more Indian women!
