Maria Sharapova will be reinstated as a UN goodwill ambassador at the end of her suspension next April, a UN statement said. The tennis star was suspended for two years after she admitted in March that she had taken the drug meldonium during the Australian Open, earlier this year.

However, after she filed an appeal, her ban was reduced to 15 months last month.

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) suspended Sharapova after her doping admission. The 29-year-old was appointed as the goodwill ambassador in February 2007.

The UNDP is glad to learn that Maria Sharapova can return to the sport she loves sooner than expected and we will lift the suspension of her role as our goodwill ambassador once the reduced ban expires in April 2017.
UN’s statement

"We understand that Ms Sharapova will be focused on resuming her tennis career and we look forward to discussing her role and engagement with the UNDP at an appropriate date," the statement added.

After the tennis player admitted to taking drugs, Sharapova’s sponsors gave mixed responses.

Sports firm Nike, racket manufacturer Head and bottled water company Evian stood by the Russian, whereas Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer cancelled the contract with Sharapova in March and Porsche suspended ties with the 29-year-old.
