This North Korean Girl’s Tale of Escape Will Leave You in Tears

Yeonmi Park walked the vast stretch of the Gobi Desert to enter China, but her escape was smooth by no means.

Yeonmi Park was 13 when she left North Korea. She didn’t migrate simply for a better life, but to escape hell – her country. Park walked the vast stretch of the Gobi Desert to enter China, but her escape was smooth by no means.

She recounts, painfully, that her mother was raped in front of her, by a Chinese broker. Speaking at the ‘One Young World Summit’ in Dublin, two years ago, Park said:

In North Korea we have a saying ‘women are weak, but mothers are strong’. I was 13 years old... They targeted me. My mother allowed herself to be raped, to protect me...

Park is now 23 and lives in South Korea. She is a human rights activist who advocates for the freedom of her country.

The video of her speech from two years ago was picked up recently by a Facebook user. Since its repost, the video has garnered over 6 million views.
